Society for Affective Science Code of Conduct Statement
Equity, diversity and inclusivity are central to the Society for Affective Science’s core values and mission. SAS recognizes that scientific progress depends on the free exchange of ideas in an environment in which all participants are treated equitably and with respect, and in which lively discussions and productive exchanges are enabled. Upholding this environment means that all participants are expected to foster an inclusive, cooperative environment where all are welcomed and treated with respect, where open dialogue is encouraged, and all perspectives are welcomed. Participants are also expected to avoid any actions, speech, or social media posts that could reasonably be construed as harassing or personally disparaging. Should you have concerns or questions about appropriate professional conduct in any SAS activity, including our annual conference, please contact Michelle (Lani) Shiota, Chair of the SAS Diversity Committee (Lani.Shiota@asu.edu).
Conference registration fees grant access to the all-virtual SAS 2022 Conference Program, live and pre-recorded sessions, and real-time professional development and networking opportunities. Note that this does not include preconference activities.
Commitment to transparency in conference pricing. SAS is fully committed to transparency in conference pricing. SAS is committed to keeping our conferences as affordable as possible, especially for trainees, while providing quality opportunities for attendees to showcase their work, interact with others, and build their network. To deliver on our promise to the SAS community, our high-quality virtual conference platform and program carries costs both similar and different to those of in-person conferences: (1) the employment of a year-round administrative team that enables SAS to plan and conduct an annual conference, which upholds the value of paid labor, and reduces the need to rely on volunteerism of faculty and trainees, (2) expenses directly related to the conference, including purchasing specialized software and additional staffing for virtual content. To continue our mission of supporting the growing fields of affective science now and in the future, SAS is striving to maintain both conference accessibility (including by offering funding opportunities for economic hardship) and the fiscal health of the society.
2022 SAS Registration Fee Support Program
SAS is committed to supporting affective scientists across the world andpromoting diverse representation in our society and discipline. In recognizingthe barriers faced by individuals fromunder–represented backgrounds and those facing economic hardship, SAS invites applications for a limited number of awards for reduced 2022 conference registration fees. These awards aim to reduce inequities based on factors includingbut not limited to ethnicity, immigration status, gender identity and sexual orientation, religion, nationality, and current economic distress. We thank the generous contributions of our society members whose annual membership fees help to support these waivers!
Eligibility: To be eligible for an award, applicants must be full-time trainees or faculty; must be presenting an acceptedabstract atthe 2022 meeting; and must NOT have access to financial support for conference registration from other sources such as grants, departmental funding, or lab funds (aletter confirming this from trainee award recipients’faculty mentorswill be required prior to notice of award).
