Pre Conferences

The 2018 SAS Annual Conference will feature four pre conferences, all of which will take place on Thursday, April 26, 2018.  Registration for the pre conferences is available online as part of conference registration. Click on the links below to find out more about each pre conference.

Pre Conference #1
Emotion & Decision-Making
Organizers: Candace Raio, New York University and Oriel FeldmanHall, Brown University
 
This Pre Conference will focus on the role that emotion plays in value-based decision-making. It will highlight research that bridges affective science with economic and social decision-making research in an effort to understand how anxiety, stress, arousal and positive/negative affect shape value representations and drive choice behavior. Invited speakers will discuss the latest research investigating the interplay between emotion and risk, uncertainty, foraging, cognitive control, reinforcement learning and social decision-making using behavioral economic and computational approaches. The Pre Conference will feature invited speakers, flash talks and a poster session, and will close with a keynote address by Dr. Brian Knutson of Stanford University.

Lunch and coffee breaks with snacks will be included with your registration fee.

This Pre Conference is accepting abstracts for flash talks and poster presentations.  Please email your 200-word (limit) to cmr385@nyu.edu. We will begin reviewing submissions on Monday, January 15, 2018, but continue accepting flash talks and poster submissions until we have filled the program.

Pre Conference #2
When Emotion and Politics Collide: The Role of Emotion in Political Attitudes, Behavior, and Conflict
Chairs:  Cherie Maestas, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Bethany Albertson, University of Texas at Austin, and Sara Levens, University of North Carolina at Charlotte
 
The purpose of the Pre Conference is to explore state-of-the art research on the pathways through which emotion shapes politics and politics shapes emotion.  We bring together scholars from multiple disciplines including political science, computing, social psychology and others to explore how positive and negative emotions shape a wide range political outcomes including engagement in politics, policy preferences, evaluation of leadership, support for democracy, political activism, and social and political group conflicts. The Pre Conference will feature two keynote speakers:  Rose McDermott, the David and Mariana Fisher University Professor of International Relations at Brown University and a Fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and studies will present “Emotional Manipulation of Political Identity by Leaders.” John R. Hibbing, the Foundation Regents Professor of Political Science and Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present “Psychology, Physiology, and Politics: Anatomy of Trump Supporters.” In addition the Pre Conference will feature a mix of short talks, flash talks, and a poster session.

Positive Emotions
Chairs: Jennifer Stellar, University of Toronto, Christopher Oveis, University of California at San Diego, and Lisa Williams, University of New South Wales 
 
The 5th Annual SAS Positive Emotions Pre Conference will feature state-of-the-art research on positive emotions. The Positive Emotions Pre Conference is designed to bring researchers together from a variety of fields to advance the science of positive emotions using a data-centric approach. We encourage thinking, discussing, and integrating, across disciplines and invite speakers that range across research lab traditions, to promote diversity in positive emotion research.

Pre Conference #4
Emotions in Social Relationships: Parents, Peers and Partners
Organizers: Jennifer Silvers (UCLA) & Darby Saxbe (USC)
 

This Pre Conference focuses on social emotions within the context of close relationships across the lifespan, including parent-child relationships; adolescent and adult friendships and peer relationships; and romantic dyads. Speakers will discuss interpersonal emotion dynamics and the functions of social emotions (including buffering stress and promoting intimacy), and integrate perspectives from neuroscience, developmental psychology, and health psychology. We will have invited speakers and are soliciting abstracts for oral and poster presentations within each of these three broad topic areas. Current confirmed speakers include Jim Coan (UVA), Naomi Eisenberger (UCLA), Jamil Zaki (Stanford), and Leah Hibel (UC Davis). The day will also include flash talks and a poster session.
