The Society for Affective Science Student Committee (SASSC) is dedicated to addressing the unique needs of students and trainees as they develop their academic expertise within the realm of affective science and navigate their professional journeys. Led by the Chair – Kyle Barrentine from the University of Virginia – SASSC supports students from undergraduate and post-baccalaureate through postdoctoral levels by coordinating both social and professional initiatives, and by fostering diversity and inclusivity.
SASSC social initiatives include events designed to build connections both during the annual conference and more locally throughout the academic year. This past year, a buddy program was introduced to help students connect with each other during the conference and save on travel or accommodation expenses. One major highlight was the SAS Student Social held during the conference – a haunting Ghost Tour in the heart of New Orleans with 60 people in attendance!
The SASSC also offers numerous professional development opportunities for students to enhance their skills. A key initiative this past year was the Graduate Application Workshop which attracted 182 participants from 84 different universities – many of whom came from first-generation or low-income backgrounds. Essential topics covered included personal statements, CVs, post-baccalaureate programs, and diversity statements. SASSC also hosted two student salons at the conference, covering topics on data visualization and navigating the challenges of handling qualitative data.
Lastly, SASSC is committed to better supporting trainees from diverse backgrounds, including minority students, international students, and those from disciplines beyond psychology and neuroscience. A notable achievement was the development of a hardship fund of $4000, which provided free conference registration for 10 low-income trainees. By creating an inclusive environment that recognizes and supports the varied experiences and contributions of all student members, SASSC hopes to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive within the field of affective science.
SASSC’s dedication and efforts have significantly enriched the SAS community, providing essential resources, support, and opportunities for professional and personal growth among students. Stay tuned for what SASSC has to offer in the coming year!
